    Project Anglia isn’t just one piece of work. To make a real difference to passengers we have to complete a package of different projects, from extending platforms to allow longer trains with more seats to run to installing modern signalling systems and improving stations.

    We’re modernising the railway for passengers, improving services and making it easier to maintain whilst keeping trains running.

  • Electrification

    One of the most complex projects involves modernising overhead lines which supply electricity to power trains to and from London Liverpool Street. These lines were last replaced in the 1950s and 60s and can no longer cope with the increased number of trains.

    Our engineers are using the coasting method to make sure that wherever possible, we can still keep two lines open for passengers while still maintaining safe working conditions for our site teams. Where possible we work over weekends and bank holidays so that we can keep trains running on weekdays when more people travel and businesses rely on us.

    Track maintenance

    Running a safe, reliable railway depends on the track being in good condition – not just the metal rails, but the foundations on which they sit too. The high output ballast cleaner has been working between Norwich and Ipswich five nights a week. Every shift so far has been completed on time, renewing more than 14 miles of railway far more quickly and efficiently than traditional methods allow.

    In November to the end of the year, the machine will return to the northern end of the line, working between Norwich and Stowmarket. In 2016 it will continue to work between London and Norwich and will also start working between Ely to Peterborough through the spring and summer.

    In late 2016 and into 2017, we'll be installing new track on the line between London and Norwich as we continue to upgrade the railway.
