  • Community Scheme

The Community Scheme is a way for voluntary groups to transform disused land in their area including old platforms, land adjoining stations, and land underneath viaducts

  • DfT-volunteers,-Norwood-Junction-community-garden-hero

The scheme is open to anyone - residents, 'Station Friends', transition towns, charities, rail partnerships, local authorities. They do anything from litter picking 'clean-up days' and painting over graffiti, to creating station gardens, wildlife areas, murals and artwork, food-growing in raised-bed gardens, and even clearing drains and undergrowth ready for heritage railways.

There are more than 100 schemes in place across the country – stretching from Cornwall to the Highlands.

We are careful to keep volunteers away from the danger of moving trains and make sure they don’t cause problems for the operating railway and as long as we can achieve this we will do our utmost to help groups to set up their own schemes.

If you have an idea for a scheme please call our 24-hour helpline on 03457 11 41 41.
