Permissible line speed is the maximum speed at which trains may operate on a track.
The maximum permissible speed of a particular train may be limited by other factors which are detailed in the various technical instructions which govern the safe operation of trains.
Each route section has a published speed limit which will vary locally according to track and route features such as junctions where trains pass between different routes.
Detailed information about these speeds is published in the National Electronic Sectional Appendix (NESA).
Line speed is taken into consideration when constructing an individual schedule or timetable for trains.
Special instructions apply for certain freight trains on the Kent, Sussex and Wessex (Southern) routes.
